You brush twice a day, so your teeth should be in great shape β right? Not so fast. Even diligent brushers make small mistakes that add up over time. Here are the most common brushing errors we see at Manhattan Smile Dental, and how to fix them.
1. You’re brushing too hard
It feels like scrubbing harder gets teeth cleaner, but the opposite is true. Aggressive brushing wears down enamel and irritates your gums, which can lead to sensitivity and recession. Use a soft-bristled brush and gentle, circular motions. Let the bristles do the work.
2. You’re not brushing long enough
Most people brush for about 45 seconds. The recommended time is a full two minutes β 30 seconds for each quadrant of your mouth. Try humming a song or using a timer to make sure you’re going the distance.
3. You’re using an old toothbrush
Frayed, worn-out bristles can’t clean effectively. Replace your toothbrush (or electric brush head) every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles look bent.
4. You skip the gumline and tongue
Plaque loves to hide where your teeth meet your gums. Angle your brush at 45 degrees toward the gumline, and don’t forget to gently brush your tongue to freshen breath and remove bacteria.
5. You brush right after eating acidic foods
After citrus, coffee, or soda, your enamel is temporarily softened. Brushing immediately can do more harm than good. Wait about 30 minutes, or rinse with water first.
Good technique matters more than brute force. Gentle, consistent care is what keeps smiles healthy for a lifetime.
